Franklin County Public Health will be collecting scrap tires from residents within their service areas (excludes the Cities of Columbus and Worthington) in an effort to reduce the mosquito population.
Scrap tires hold water making it the perfect environment for mosquitoes to lay their eggs and to hatch especially the aggressive Asian Tiger Mosquito, which is a daytime and nighttime biter that prefers to lay eggs in containers that not only hold water but are close to people’s homes. Once they hatch, they do not travel far from their juvenile habitat.
Mosquito larvicide tablets valued around $25 will also be available for free. They can be used to treat rain barrels or other containers of standing water on your property. You do not have to drop off tires to receive the larvicide tablets. One package per family will be given.
All scrap tire turn-in days will be from 9 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays.
